Los Santos → Leonida

🛰 Updated August 11, 2026

Thirteen years, three console generations, one billion dollars in three days, a company-shaking leak, two departures at the top, two trailers and two delays. This is the honest fan's timeline — from the day GTA V put PS3s and Xbox 360s on the map (September 17, 2013) to the day GTA VI finally hits (November 19, 2026). We separate what Rockstar actually said from what the internet decided. And because you asked: the engine gets its own deep-dive below. No hype we can't source. When something's a rumor, we say so.

The reviews land: near-perfect scores

A day before the streets open, the embargo lifts and GTA V posts some of the highest aggregate scores in history — a 98 Metascore on Xbox 360 and 97 on PS3, tying GTA IV among the best-reviewed games ever made. (Metacritic's 2023 recount now displays 97 for both SKUs.) The bar for the franchise is set at 'flawless' before a single retail copy sells.

GTA V hits the streets — PS3 and Xbox 360 only

Grand Theft Auto V launches worldwide, exclusively on the seventh-gen consoles of the day: PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No PS4, no Xbox One, no PC — those come later. This is the original shipping game, three switchable protagonists in a Los Santos that dwarfs anything Rockstar had built.

2013-09-17 ENGINE
Under the hood: RAGE powers Los Santos

GTA V runs on RAGE — the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine — using a hybrid deferred renderer with reworked lighting, particles and ambient occlusion. Same in-house tech that debuted on Table Tennis in 2006, now integrating NaturalMotion's Euphoria for character animation and the open-source Bullet engine for physics. Fans call this build 'RAGE 7'; Rockstar never did — the number is community shorthand, not an official spec.

2013-09-20 GTA V
$1 billion in three days

11.21 million units and $815.7 million in the first 24 hours. One billion dollars in worldwide sell-through by day three — the fastest any entertainment property had ever gotten there (Black Ops II took ~15 days). Six Guinness World Records fall at once, including highest revenue by any entertainment product in 24 hours. The industry recalibrates what a launch can be.

GTA Online goes live — and the servers melt

The free GTA Online update drops and immediately buckles: 'Rockstar cloud servers unavailable,' freezes, lost progress, vanished cash and cars. Rockstar admits demand ran past what it 'anticipated,' says it's working around the clock to add servers, and later hands every affected player a $500,000 in-game stimulus. The mode that funds the next decade starts as a dumpster fire.

2014-11-18 GTA V
Second pass: PS4 and Xbox One

The eighth-gen re-release arrives with higher resolution, denser traffic and wildlife, and a brand-new first-person mode that changes how a lot of people play. Same game, sharper world.

PC at last — 4K and the Rockstar Editor

After multiple delays, GTA V lands on PC with 4K support, extended draw distances and the Rockstar Editor — proof of how far RAGE could scale on high-end hardware. The modding and machinima scene explodes.

2018-10-26 ENGINE
RDR2 ships — RAGE's biggest overhaul

Red Dead Redemption 2 rebuilds RAGE's rendering around full physically based rendering, volumetric clouds and fog, and pre-calculated global illumination (the 2019 PC port adds DirectX 12 and Vulkan). Euphoria is overhauled for emergent reactions, AI is rewritten for the first time in 17 years, and console memory allows roughly 10x the animations of GTA V. This — not GTA V — is the real technical parent of GTA VI.

2019-2020 BUSINESS
GTA VI development ramps up in earnest

With RDR2 out the door, the bulk of Rockstar's studios shift onto the next GTA around 2019-2020 (pre-production predates that). Note the distinction: 'in development since ~2018' and 'full production ~2019-2020' are reported/estimated milestones — Rockstar never published a start date.

2020-03-11 PEOPLE
Dan Houser walks

Co-founder and lead writer Dan Houser — credited on 12 GTA titles and both Red Dead games — officially exits Rockstar after a 2019 sabbatical. Brother Sam Houser stays on as company president and leads GTA VI. (Producer Leslie Benzies, the other creative pillar of the GTA V era, had already departed years earlier.) The house that built Vice City loses one of its architects heading into the biggest project of all.

2022-02-04 REVEAL
Rockstar breaks the silence

After nine years of nothing but rumor, Rockstar posts the words fans had waited for: 'active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is underway.' No title, no setting, no characters, no date — but it's the first official acknowledgment that GTA VI is real.

2022-03-15 GTA V
GTA V, third generation: Expanded & Enhanced

A ninth-gen edition lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — up to 4K/60fps, ray tracing, HDR, 3D audio, faster loads — alongside a standalone GTA Online you can play without buying the story. GTA V becomes the game that shipped on three console generations. RAGE's scalability, receipt attached.

2022-09-18 BUSINESS
The leak that shook Rockstar

An intruder posts roughly 90 videos of work-in-progress GTA VI footage to a forum. Rockstar confirms the network breach on Sept 19 — 'an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information' — and says development 'will continue as planned.' Take-Two fires off takedowns. (The material was stolen; only official coverage is referenced here.)

2023-12-05 REVEAL
Trailer 1: Welcome back to Vice City

After a low-quality copy leaks a day early, Rockstar drops the official ~91-second trailer. It confirms the title Grand Theft Auto VI, the Leonida / Vice City setting, dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, and a 2025 window for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC announced. The Bonnie-and-Clyde era begins.

2024-05 BUSINESS
GTA V crosses 200 million copies

Take-Two earnings coverage puts GTA V past 200 million units — up from ~195M in early 2024 — cementing it as one of the best-selling games of all time, eleven years after launch. Exact per-quarter figures come from outlet reporting on shareholder disclosures.

2025-05-06 DELAY
Trailer 2 — and the first delay

The second trailer foregrounds Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval in a reimagined Vice City, reportedly clearing 60M+ views in 24 hours. In the same early-May window Rockstar confirms the game has slipped from its 2025 target to May 26, 2026 — the first public delay.

2025-11-06 DELAY
Delayed again: November 19, 2026

Alongside quarterly earnings, Rockstar announces a second slip — from May 26 to November 19, 2026 — apologizing for 'adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait,' citing the polish 'you have come to expect and deserve.' No specific cause given; Take-Two stock tanks on the news.

2025-12 BUSINESS
GTA V past 225M; a decade of Online pays the bill

By the Holiday 2025 results GTA V clears 225 million copies (franchise 425M+), and reporting pegs GTA V near $10 billion in lifetime revenue — driven heavily by GTA Online. Analysis (not a Rockstar statement) argues a decade of Shark Card spending effectively bankrolled GTA VI's estimated $1-1.5B budget. Treat the dollar figures as reported/estimated.

2025 BUSINESS
The biggest team in Rockstar history

GTA VI is built across essentially every Rockstar studio worldwide — North, New York, San Diego, Lincoln, India, Toronto and more — the largest coordinated team the company has ever fielded. That much is well-reported. The viral '7,500+ developers across 11 studios' breakdown and the $1-2B budget are aggregator figures and analyst estimates — not Rockstar or Take-Two disclosures. Directional truth: biggest ever. Precise numbers: unverified.

2026-08-27 GTA VI
An Extended Look — on Netflix first

Rockstar premieres 'Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look' — Netflix at 3 PM ET, then YouTube and the official site at 9 PM ET, in what Netflix bills as a first-of-its-kind partnership. Confirmed: the date, platforms and partnership. Not confirmed: that it's a gameplay/dev-narration showcase — that's outlet expectation, not a Rockstar promise.

2026-11-19 GTA VI
Launch day: Grand Theft Auto VI

Thirteen years and two months after Los Santos, Vice City reopens. GTA VI releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — the payoff for two trailers, two delays, and the longest wait in the franchise's history. See you in Leonida.

⚙️ The RAGE engine — what GTA VI actually runs on

The verdict

GTA VI runs on RAGE — Rockstar's in-house Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, the same lineage behind Table Tennis, GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. That part is confirmed. Everything past the name — a 'RAGE 9' version number, 'full rebuild vs. evolution,' 'Euphoria 2.0,' FFT ocean water — is unofficial. Rockstar has never version-numbered its engine.

RAGE isn't a buzzword — it's the through-line of every modern Rockstar world. Born at Rockstar San Diego after EA's 2004 purchase of Criterion pulled the RenderWare rug out from under the studio, RAGE has been quietly rebuilt and re-armed for 20 years. What matters for GTA VI: Rockstar's only engine is RAGE, so GTA VI uses RAGE — full stop. What we can't tell you, because Rockstar hasn't said a word about engine internals, is how deep the rewrite goes. Best reporting calls it an evolution of the RDR2 build, not a ground-up rebuild. Below: the family tree, the subsystems that give GTA its feel, and every circulating tech claim graded honestly.

The family tree — 20 years of RAGE

2004
RAGE Technology Group founded (from the Angel Game Engine) — After EA bought Criterion and its RenderWare middleware, Rockstar San Diego spun up a proprietary replacement, evolving its own Angel Game Engine into what became RAGE.
2006
Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis — First game ever shipped on RAGE — a tech demo on Xbox 360 proving out the engine before it was scaled to open worlds.
2008
Grand Theft Auto IV — First major open-world RAGE title; introduced the pairing of NaturalMotion's Euphoria (procedural animation) and the Bullet physics engine — the reactive-ragdoll feel is born here.
2010
Red Dead Redemption — RAGE goes to the frontier; Euphoria's physics-driven reactions become a signature.
2012
Max Payne 3 — RAGE's rendering retooled with DirectX 11, ambient occlusion and improved lighting/particles on PC; first RAGE title cited at 720p parity across PS3/360.
2013
Grand Theft Auto V — Hybrid deferred renderer; later scaled from PS3/360 up to 4K/60fps PC and ray-traced PS5/Series editions — the fan-labeled 'RAGE 7' (unofficial).
2018
Red Dead Redemption 2 — RAGE's biggest overhaul: physically based rendering, volumetric clouds/fog, pre-calculated GI, a Vulkan/DX12 PC renderer, and an overhauled Euphoria. The last confirmed major leap before GTA VI.
2026
Grand Theft Auto VI — Latest RAGE iteration. Reported to be an evolution of the RDR2 build. No official version number — 'RAGE 9' is fan/press invention.

The subsystems that give GTA its feel

Euphoria (NaturalMotion)

The character-animation layer since GTA IV. Its 'Dynamic Motion Synthesis' simulates a body and motor system in real time so stumbles, impacts, balance recoveries and struggles are generated unscripted rather than played from canned clips. NaturalMotion — an Oxford spin-out founded Nov 2001 — was licensed by Rockstar in 2007; it's now owned by Take-Two (via the Zynga acquisition), the same parent as Rockstar. Overhauled for RDR2; a 'Euphoria 2.0' for GTA VI is speculation, not confirmed.

Bullet (physics)

The open-source physics engine RAGE integrates for rigid-body dynamics and collision — cars crumpling, stacked objects collapsing, impact behavior. Works underneath Euphoria: Bullet handles the world's physics, Euphoria layers reactive character motion on top. The combination is what makes a GTA crash feel like a GTA crash.

RAGE audio (RAVE / DSP)

A bespoke in-house audio system — not off-the-shelf middleware — authored in Rockstar's RAGE Audio Visualization Environment (RAVE) tool since GTA IV. GTA V's build added real-time synthesis and DSP, detailed publicly in the GDC 2014 talk 'The Sound of Grand Theft Auto V.' GTA VI's audio extends this lineage.

Weather & time-of-day

Dynamic weather and day/night are a confirmed franchise capability going back to GTA V, with RDR2 praised for an 'unrivaled' weather system. For GTA VI specifically — hurricanes, floods and storms fitting the Florida-inspired Leonida — the implementation is inferred from trailers, job listings and leaks. Rockstar has published no weather-tech details.

Every GTA VI engine claim, graded honestly

CONFIRMEDREPORTEDSPECULATIONDEBUNKED
CONFIRMEDGTA VI uses RAGE

Confirmed at the top level: RAGE is Rockstar's only engine, so GTA VI runs on it — the same lineage as GTA V and RDR2. This is the one hard fact in the whole engine conversation.

DEBUNKEDThere is no official 'RAGE 9'

Rockstar has never publicly numbered RAGE. 'RAGE 9' (with RDR2 retroactively dubbed 'RAGE 8') is a community/press convention counted forward from earlier games — not a Rockstar or Take-Two designation. Any 'RAGE 9' capability spec sheet is unofficial. Treat the version number as debunked as an official term.

CONFIRMEDTrailer 2 was captured on a base PS5

The closest thing to an official hardware data point: Rockstar stated Trailer 2 (May 2025) footage was captured on a standard PlayStation 5 — not a PS5 Pro — mixing real-time gameplay and in-game cutscenes. Whatever RAGE build this is, it renders those visuals on base current-gen console hardware. No resolution, frame rate or engine internals were disclosed.

CONFIRMEDTake-Two speaks only to scale — never to engine specs

CEO Strauss Zelnick calls GTA VI's 'ambition and complexity' beyond anything Rockstar has made and the studio 'seeking perfection.' No earnings call or Newswire post has ever disclosed engine version, rendering pipeline, ray-tracing implementation, NPC-density or physics systems. Every technical spec in circulation is therefore inference or leak — not company disclosure.

CONFIRMEDNaturalMotion (Euphoria) sits under Take-Two now

Confirmed corporate structure, not a capability claim: Zynga bought NaturalMotion for $527M in Jan 2014; Take-Two then acquired Zynga (announced Jan 10, 2022, closed mid-2022). So Rockstar and the maker of Euphoria share a parent. Any claim that this hands Rockstar new or exclusive Euphoria rights for GTA VI is analyst inference, not an official statement.

REPORTEDBest sourcing says evolution, not full rebuild

Kotaku (April 3, 2026), citing a source 'with knowledge of Rockstar,' pushed back on the 'complete rebuild' framing: GTA VI's RAGE is described as an evolution that folds in work from both GTA V and RDR2, consistent with Rockstar sharing code across studios. GamesRadar echoed it ('more of an expansion on what Rockstar used in RDR2'). Single-source, anonymous — solid reporting, but not an official Rockstar statement.

SPECULATION'They probably rebuilt the entire engine' — a former dev's guess

Rob Carr, a former Rockstar audio engineer (GTA V, L.A. Noire), said on a podcast Rockstar 'probably rebuilt the entirety of the Rage Engine' for GTA VI — while explicitly stating 'I know nothing about it,' reasoning only from how long development has taken and how far tech has advanced since GTA V. This is an outside inference, and it's the exact claim Kotaku's source was walking back. Speculation, not confirmation.

SPECULATIONDigital Foundry reads the lighting as fully ray-traced GI

In DF's trailer breakdowns, the entire lighting model looks like ray-traced global illumination with no rasterized lighting — bounced diffuse light on skin, interiors and streets; ray-traced reflections on sunglasses, mirrors, windscreens and small water; screen-space reflections on larger water and glass; filtered/cascaded shadows like RDR2. Crucial caveat: these are DF's inferences from compressed trailer footage, not Rockstar-confirmed features.

SPECULATION~1152p FSR1, likely 30fps on console (analyst estimate)

Digital Foundry measured Trailer 2 at roughly 1152p reconstructed via FSR1 and argued a 60fps console mode is unlikely — it would force resolution too low to keep the game's visual identity, and the frame target looks CPU-bound by AI/physics/streaming density. DF also flagged strand-based hair on all NPCs, separately-animated hair/clothing, and sweat/skin shading. All estimation from trailer footage — Rockstar has published no resolution, upscaler or frame-rate targets.

SPECULATION'Euphoria 2.0' with a per-NPC nervous system — fan blog claim

A blog describes GTA VI shipping 'Euphoria 2.0' simulating a central nervous system for every NPC, with location-specific injury reactions pinned to a Digital Foundry timestamp. None of it could be corroborated in any Rockstar statement or reputable outlet, and Rockstar has released no breakdown of GTA VI's animation system — the game's Euphoria presence isn't even officially confirmed by name. Improved reactions are plausible given the RDR2 baseline, but 'Euphoria 2.0' is speculation.

SPECULATIONFFT ocean / simulated water physics — leak-derived rumor

Circulating leak-and-analysis reporting attributes new water tech to Rockstar San Diego's RAGE Technology Group: water simulated as a volume, ocean waves via Fast Fourier Transforms reacting to wind and weather in real time, boats deforming the surface with depth-based transparency. This originates from datamined material and fan analysis — not Rockstar — and is cited as coverage only. Rumor pending official confirmation.

SPECULATIONDynamic weather & disasters for Leonida — trailer inference

Trailers show detailed rain, wind, cloud and ocean interaction, and analysis plus job postings point to a dynamic weather system with hurricanes and floods fitting the Florida-inspired map (some reporting says extreme events may have been scaled back). Dynamic weather is a confirmed franchise capability (GTA V/RDR2), but GTA VI's specific implementation is unconfirmed — trailer inference and rumor, not a Rockstar tech statement.

About this page. gta6vc.us is an unofficial fan site with no affiliation to Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. Dates and figures are sourced to the reporting linked on each entry; sales and budget numbers come from outlet coverage of Take-Two disclosures and are reported/estimated unless marked confirmed. Every engine claim is graded: 'confirmed' means Rockstar or Take-Two said it (or it's an unavoidable fact, like RAGE being their only engine); 'reported' means credible outlet sourcing; 'speculation' means analyst inference or a single ex-developer's opinion; 'debunked' means the term itself ('RAGE 9') is not official. We never present speculation as fact — and we never link stolen/leaked material, only coverage of it.
